Team photo coming soon...it's hard to corral all of us in one place!
The photo above was taken in early 2020 after purchasing this little piece of Heaven, we now call Black Barn Rescue.
My wonderful mother, pictured above, she and I were out here "clearing land" and our tools were a push mower, weed eater, and hedge trimmers! If you look to the right of this picture, you'll see a faint trail going up the hill that we blazed with said push mower and weed eater...and it took us a hot minute I tell you, hence the "Rosie the Riveter" pose my mother is sporting (she is 91 years old by the way).
We did this for a few days and then on the drive in from Sherman we saw a box truck in a field on Hwy 82 that had an advertisement for a land clearing company; I wasted no time in calling them and they came out that same day to quote a price for the job and that was the beginning of a great relationship that we still value to this day, and... my mother and I semi-retired as land clearers.
After this, we got an official address, pulled electricity to the property, drilled a water well (not me and my mother, but a legit well driller), a cabin was delivered and finished out, and more land was cleared, we were getting closer and closer to our animal rescue.
Between 2020 and 2024 we weathered various storms, repaired broken things (mostly mowers, plumbing and well water issues), installed a water flirtation system in the pump house so us and the animals would have clean water; we rearranged priorities and put needs ahead of wants and kept looking forward to what was ahead.
Today, in 2025 we are an official 501 (c) 3; we are building that fence we so desperately need to keep these animals safe, we've lost a few to the busy Farm Road but they definitely lived their best lives while running healthy and free once they came to us from the desperate circumstances that led them to our place.
We are here to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome at risk horses and livestock guardian dogs, ensuring their safety, well-being, and a second chance at a fulfilling life.
We want to be a partner to the community, ranchers, farmers, and families who may need to surrender their animals for various reasons without judgement; and instead offer support to help them and the animals being surrendered to have a better, more positive outcome for all involved.
Our future... holds the future of as many young girls aging out of the foster care system as God sends our way; as we look forward to the day when we bring those young women to a place that will be a soft, safe landing for them to be nurtured around positive mentors from the community and given the tools, love and support to go into the world and live their best independent life, with confidence and self-worth.
For many of these young women it may be the first time they will have a home where they feel safe to fail and still be accepted and encouraged, and the horses and pups will serve as great therapy animals to aid in the healing process for whatever trauma these young women may be holding on to...and anytime we as humans can serve others or animals, it helps us grow and get out of our heads and rise above our troubles.
One of the most insightful, humbling, and healing times of my life was while volunteering at an animal shelter in McKinney Texas, in the livestock and equine division mucking out horse stalls and cleaning up after animals, at early-thirty in the dark of morning...it took me back to fond childhood memories and brought peace and love to my heart.
At BBR, we are here to love, nurture, and serve the animals and the community of Northeast Texas.
